Saint Lucia is continuing to reposition itself as a competitive, service-led economy. In the face of challenges brought on by trade liberalization, globalization and the recent economic meltdown; first on the United States and then around the world, our country finds itself at a pivotal stage in its development.
Since 2000, banana production — once Saint Lucia’s economic mainstay — has halved, with a corresponding drop in revenue of 44%. Continued and increased investment is therefore critical if Saint Lucia is to build up sustainable and diversified economic sectors. Traditionally, as a country and largely led by the National Development Corporation (NDC) much resources has been committed to attracting overseas based investors as a means of boosting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The NDC in a renewed and focused drive to fulfill its mandate to promote investment in Saint Lucia has identified the untapped potential of the Saint Lucian Diaspora as a significant source of investment capital in the economy and as a niche market for local business...
